Is it alright for Christians to listen to secular music?

So I am at the Blacks in Government Conference this week promoting First Fruits Publishing and No Greater Love and I was asked, if Emanuel and Jada (two characters from the book) are Christian then why are they listening to Luther Vandross... So my question is, "Is it alright for Christians to listen to secular music?"

  1. I am a Christian and I listen to some secular music. I believe that people who make comments like that are so spiritually minded that they are no earthly good. The Bible warns against that. I don't care how saved you are... it is impossible for a married couple to get romantic listening to Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, or Mary, Mary. There is a time and a place for every thing.

  2. I am a Christian and I also listen to some secular music. Yes, as Christians we do need to be mindful as to what we feed our mind with because according to Phil. 4:8 we are to meditate on things that are pure and true (paraphrased). However, there are a lot of secular songs that talk about love and positive things, as well as songs that all purely instrumental, like jazz. We just need to have spritual discernment as to we think we can or should not listen to. In regards to the book, I don't think that there is anything wrong with married people listening to love songs like Luther.
